If you love the sound of the tenor saxophone given free rein, without unnecessary frills and with a deep appreciation for musical interplay, this is the album for you.
With this release, Walter Smith III returns to the concept he first explored on his 2018 album Twio: a trio of saxophone, double bass and drums, without a chordal instrument, capable of creating a spacious, free-flowing sound without sacrificing structure or depth.
The presence of Ron Carter and Branford Marsalis on several tracks adds further depth to a repertoire consisting mainly of jazz standards, revisited with creativity and a refreshingly unselfconscious approach. As always with Smith’s stylistic choices, there is a finely balanced synthesis of tradition and modern sensibility.
The album is a pleasure to listen to, thanks both to the elegance of the leader’s saxophone playing and to the rapport he establishes with his fellow musicians and distinguished guests. It is a tribute to the jazz tradition, but also a statement of intent: a demonstration of how the trio format can reinvent classic material with spontaneity and sophistication.
