A project that interweaves biblical narrative, spiritual reflection, and the language of contemporary jazz. The fifth chapter in the Blue Note journey of one of the leading figures on the new U.S. jazz scene. As Ross himself has explained, the underlying idea is to shape a sonic arc of biblical history – from creation to salvation – exploring faith and the practice of love, towards God and towards others. The pieces are conceived as stages along a spiritual path, with biblical texts also appearing in the promotional materials and liner notes. The music thus becomes meditation, prayer, and inner dialogue.

The band – an established working unit – is an ensemble capable of combining virtuosity with a finely tuned collective sensibility, in which gospel is understood as an energy able to generate tension between technical complexity and emotional immediacy. Ross has often described his artistic path as a balance between technical rigour and emotional openness; here he pushes that vision further, merging the aesthetics of modern jazz with the sonic experience of Chicago’s Black church music, where his musical formation began in childhood.

From this perspective, “Gospel Music” presents itself not merely as a jazz album, but as a narrative device in which faith, community, and musical practice are tightly interwoven. In this sense, it stands as his most personal and spiritually focused recording to date. “The Parable of the Poet” unfolded as a kind of extended musical suite – almost a sonic parable – shaped by emotional currents of rare beauty, while “Nublues” explored the core of the blues with striking melodic eloquence. “Gospel Music” brings these two previous trajectories together, infusing them with a clear spiritual intention and a message of hope in which narrative and emotion become inseparable, placing Joel Ross’s musical voice at a remarkably high level.

An album that opens 2026 under the best possible auspices for the Afro-American musical idiom. Available since late January.
