Every new release by Mat Maneri is something of a godsend. We have been following the Italian-American violist, son of Joe Maneri — who, as is well known, achieved recognition remarkably late in life, in one of the most extraordinary cases in jazz history — for some thirty years now, and we must admit that he has never disappointed us.
Of course, we have grown familiar with his highly distinctive music: lurching, constantly shifting, often dark. Each new recording merely reaffirms its defining characteristics, yet these are waters into which we always gladly immerse ourselves, precisely because of that immediately recognisable, deeply individual atmosphere, almost reassuring in its fundamental elusiveness.
On this latest album, comprising eight tracks, Maneri is joined by musicians exceptionally well suited to his musical world. His partnership with Ban, in particular, has become so close as to amount almost to a musical brotherhood. Each player weaves his own near-intangible textures, never particularly assertive, although there are occasional, relatively infrequent crescendos. Everything unfolds within a genuinely collective musical discourse, free yet firmly connected to clearly perceptible shifts in atmosphere and structure.
Such is the power of this music, of its creative impulse and its way of working — its moods, its progressions, its very soul — all imbued with an unmistakably individual character. Yes, it is that old, endlessly captivating allure of uniqueness.
