Pelt opens with Invention, a metaphysical prologue where his electronically treated trumpet engages in spectral dialogue with Jalen Baker’s vibraphone. Then comes Rhapsody, introduced by the doo-wop stylings of Spanish vocalist Mar Vilaseca, recalling Weather Report’s more soulful excursions.
But it is Afrofuturism that anchors the album—a concept suite exploring acoustic balladry through richly melodic compositions like Michelle and Fair Weather. Pelt’s artistry lies in his balance: elegant yet exploratory, accessible but never facile. His music is a continuous negotiation between innovation and heritage.
The ensemble coheres beautifully, with Harrell and Baker—already solidified from Tomorrow’s Another Day—providing nuanced ballast. Ukrainian guitarist Mendelenko contributes flowing, lyrical lines, especially on Afrofuturism, where he offers a subtle yet arresting voice.
Woven is a quietly daring statement—sophisticated, soulful, and thoroughly modern.
