Zanuttini is known for his collaborations with Francesco Cusa & The Assassins, Piero Bittolo Bon, and Giovanni Maier. He has consistently shown a strong inclination toward experimentation in his solo work – from La Notte (Umland, 2018) to Ginkgo (Setola di Maiale, 2022) – as well as in AER (2024), a self-produced duo with vocalist Elsa Martin. The Udine-based trumpeter had already teamed up with Kaučič on Pogum pogumnih (Zvočni izviri, 2022), so this new duo album with the Slovenian percussionist feels like a natural development.
Here, Zanuttini skillfully manipulates his instrument using a variety of techniques. He employs delay to construct clusters of punctuated, stretched notes, and uses filters and electronic processing to generate microcells and sonic textures that at times evoke the poetics of Jon Hassell. Through subtraction, he carves out alienating phrases with a tone that can be ragged, hoarse, even choked by breath and sound stopped at the mouthpiece – a clear nod to Bill Dixon’s aesthetic.
Kaučič, for his part, responds with tireless – at times feverish – percussive invention and his usual wide-ranging command of rhythm and timbre. With fifty years of experience in improvised music and acute listening skills, he is able to perceive subtle cues and rework them in real time, feeding back stimuli to his partner and pushing the dialogue forward.
The result is nine episodes where the value of each sonic cell, the dynamic balance, and the exploration of timbral variety take absolute precedence – even during the most intense crescendos.
