This is not merely a tribute to Dinah Washington, but a statement of artistic continuity that, on the one hand, acknowledges the importance of a pioneer and, on the other, firmly asserts Ledisi’s voice among today’s leading interpreters. The album brings together nine standards drawn from Washington’s most recognisable repertoire, from “What a Difference a Day Made” to “This Bitter Earth”.

Ledisi’s voice, long celebrated for its dynamic power, finds here an ideal setting in which to resonate fully. Her approach avoids the trap of imitation: while maintaining respect for the originals, she imprints a strong personal identity, with phrasing that often feels like a direct dialogue with Washington’s legacy.

Under the direction of Christian McBride, the arrangements are restrained and refined, leaving ample space for both the voice and the instrumental detail. Each track maintains a careful balance between tradition and modernity. The project is further enriched by notable contributions, such as Gregory Porter on “You’ve Got What It Takes” and guitarist Paul Jackson Jr., both of whom deepen the musical dialogue between past and present.

“For Dinah” is an album to be approached with respect for history, and with a sense of enjoyment for the interpretative vitality that Ledisi brings to every note.
