Five years after the release of the first No Land project, Apulian bassist Matteo Bortone – here performing exclusively on electric bass – returns with a new chapter. Winner of Top Jazz in 2015, Bortone has built solid credentials as both leader and sideman. On A Tree in the Mist he offers a compelling set of original compositions that at times recall illustrious figures such as Mark Egan and Steve Swallow, while maintaining the distinctive character that defines his music.
The tight, hypnotic grooves laid down by Bortone and drummer Ariel Tessier form the foundation for the explorations of Julien Pontvianne and Benjamin Garson. Garson’s guitar lines often carry a distinctly Frisellian hue, while Pontvianne’s saxophone provides a contrasting edge. Equally crucial is Yannick Lestra, whose keyboard work acts as the glue holding the ensemble together. Already an established voice on the European scene, and a frequent collaborator with Filippo Vignato, Lestra proves indispensable here.
The music shifts fluidly between atmospheres, yet always remains anchored in a contemporary jazz groove. It is the drive of the rhythm section that dominates, propelling the album forward with consistent force.
For those already familiar with Bortone’s work, this album confirms his stature; for new listeners, it will be a welcome discovery. In both cases, A Tree in the Mist marks an important step in his artistic maturity and signals a new chapter for European jazz.
