The presence of Carlos Zingaro undoubtedly illuminates this work of free improvisation. The 76-year-old Portuguese violinist first made his mark in Italy some forty years ago as a member of Andrea Centazzo’s Mitteleuropa Orchestra, and here his contribution proves fully equal to that of his two younger colleagues. The interplay between the two strings, with percussion providing a subtle yet central backdrop, is perhaps the album’s strongest card. The dialogue between violin and double bass highlights contrasting registers, ranging from dense and agitated textures to calm, airy passages.

The album consists of four episodes (simply numbered I–IV), from seven and a half minutes for the second to nearly eighteen minutes for the third. Each develops with palpable geometric logic – a sense of overall architecture – in the search for a form that unfolds gradually, solidly, and with skill. This form reflects a kind of experimentalism, both sonic and gestural, that never feels arbitrary or pretentious but is always at the service of interplay: tenaciously pursued, and happily achieved.
