Cline’s multifaceted artistry—marked by an extraordinary eclecticism—defies summary. His constant pursuit of the unexpected has led him, once again on Blue Note, to form a brand-new ensemble for his fourth album on the label, four years after Share the Wealth. This release brings his creative voice into sharper focus within a more explicitly jazz-oriented framework, while still embracing a broad spectrum of influences and deep jazz knowledge.
Alongside Cline’s distinctive leadership and compositional flair—especially successful here, with half of the pieces composed during the lockdown—there are other elements that contribute to the album’s excellence. A key role is played by Ingrid Laubrock, whose contributions prove vital. Known for her work in avant-garde circles (The Bag, Satomi), the German saxophonist integrates seamlessly into the quartet, engaging in dynamic interplay with Cline (notably on Surplus and House of Steam), while never losing her distinctive voice.
Equally essential is the rhythm section—Lightcap and Rainey, both in superb form—laying a foundation that supports this formidable double album. Rainey, in particular, delivers an exceptional performance. It’s no exaggeration to call this Cline’s best Blue Note outing—and perhaps his finest album to date. It’s also one of the year’s standout releases. “Compelling,” in the guitarist’s own words, is the perfect descriptor: lucid post-bop writing, experimental flourishes, contemplative episodes, and electric riffs all coexist in a cohesive whole. The blend of blues and jazz-rock is natural and organic, with each musician making an indispensable contribution.
This is an album not to be missed.
