Born in 1937, educated at the Turin Conservatory, and later based in Milan, Rusca immersed himself in the crucible where Italian jazz took shape – clubs, recording studios, television soundstages – performing alongside figures such as Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Lee Konitz, Chet Baker, and Enrico Rava.
