“Welcome Back” (also available on vinyl) marks the fourth recording chapter of a group active since 2011. Over the years, the partnership between Bosso, Marsico and Minetto has stood out for an engaging and direct artistic approach, capable of reaching a wide range of listeners, including those who do not usually gravitate towards this kind of music. Compared to the first album – built largely on traditionals and standards – the trio has progressively developed an original repertoire inspired by gospel and “spiritual” sonorities, which have shaped its aesthetic from the outset.

There is no shortage of excursions into related territory: Billy Preston’s “You Are So Beautiful”, Bernard Herrmann’s “Theme from Taxi Driver” – made iconic by Tom Scott’s saxophone in the recorded version (while in the film it was played by Ronnie Lang) – and Horace Silver’s “The Preacher”. The programme, refined through an intense live activity, opens with “Welcome Back”, which functions as a kind of ideal calling card for the trio.

Adding a further touch of colour to the album is the presence of the Castagnole Community Choir on “Thank You Lord”, a track in which the trio engages in a joyful and participatory dialogue with the gospel choir from the small Piedmont town. The group confirms itself as a flexible and well-balanced formation, capable of providing the leader with a solid framework in which to highlight the qualities that have always distinguished him: a deeply lyrical approach to the instrument, absolute technical command, and a sound that is immediately recognisable – original yet firmly rooted in tradition.

Marsico’s warm organ tone clearly evokes the gospel legacy, while Minetto’s drumming ensures a rhythmic support that is incisive yet never excessive, lending the musical discourse precisely the right groove. A welcome return to the recording scene for which – perhaps more than ever – the title says it all: Welcome Back.
