The influence of Steve Lacy permeates this recording, which is explicitly dedicated to him – though it consists entirely of original compositions. Coastline greets the listener with warmth and immediacy, offering a radiant and finely crafted statement from 49-year-old Breton soprano saxophonist Matthieu Donarier (also a skilled clarinetist), who has been leading his own projects for about two decades, most of them released by Yolk Music, the label behind this excellent ninth album.
Fresh, luminous, and impeccably structured, the recording owes much to the superb ensemble accompanying Donarier – an eminent quartet whose cohesion and sensitivity serve the music perfectly.
One of the album’s most remarkable traits is the lucidity of Donarier’s writing. His homage to Lacy draws inspiration not from the latter’s most radical or transgressive side, but from a more introspective and melodic dimension. The result is a portrait that is both eloquent and intimate: Donarier depicts himself through Lacy, and Lacy through himself – a dialogue across generations that feels as natural as it is heartfelt.
