This 2017 performance captures Peter Brötzmann in dialogue with two equally committed free improvisers—Russian multi-reedist Vlady Bystrov and Estonian pianist Anto Pett—at the Neue Musik Festival in Brunswick. Though recorded years before his death in 2023, Ranging is a potent late-career document.
While moments of fury remain—Rhythmic Alchemy and Whispers in the Abyss burn with Ayler-esque heat—Brötzmann reveals an unusually melodic side on tárogató and clarinet. In Steppenwolf Serenade and Haller’s Lament, he explores mournful, almost ritualistic cadences, shaped as much by silence as by sound.
Each of the five improvisations unfolds with an uncanny compositional coherence, and Pett’s piano is essential in anchoring and expanding the trio’s vocabulary. Another testament to Brötzmann’s unwavering, lifelong commitment to the art of improvisation.
