Paolo Angeli is a singular figure on today’s international scene: a Sardinian guitarist, composer and improviser who has transformed the traditional chitarra sarda into a unique, hybrid instrument – part orchestra, part sound laboratory. Equipped with extra strings, prepared elements and live electronics, his guitar allows him to blend Sardinian folk tradition, jazz, post-rock, contemporary music and free improvisation into a language that is entirely his own. Over the past three decades he has released numerous solo albums and collaborations, and has worked with artists ranging from Fred Frith and Hamid Drake to Pat Metheny, who commissioned a custom version of Angeli’s instrument.
