Minnesota, located in the northern United States on the border with Canada, has unfortunately made headlines recently for dramatic reasons, certainly not artistic ones. Yet the state has given birth to some of the most influential figures in American culture. In literature, there is the defining figure of F. Scott Fitzgerald: a precocious genius, a flash of dazzling brilliance in the first half of the last century, gone far too soon, as were, in music, Eddie Cochran, one of the greats of rock’n’roll; Judy Garland, who left an indelible mark on the history of cinema and entertainment more broadly; and Prince, the magnetic re-builder of funk and rhythm’n’blues.
